New Orbital Highway and Truck Route contract (Zone 4)

Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. (Daewoo E&C), one of South Korea's largest builders, said Friday it secured a US$910 million highway construction project in Qatar. The company said it won part of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route contract from Ashghal, the Middle East country's public works authority. The highway contract is the third-largest road construction order secured by a South Korean construction company in a foreign country. Daewoo E&C will be in charge of engineering and design as well as construction of the road. The company said the project will take 35 months to complete. The 200-kilometer-long highway connects Ras Laffan Industrial City with the Mesaieed region, with Daewoo winning the fourth zone linking the Al Khor Link Road with Dukhan Highway. This is a 42-km-stretch of the road that will have five interchanges and numerous bridges. Daewoo said the 14 lane road will have smart road traffic controls and the latest wastewater treatment systems. The builder said it received recognition from Qatar for the 80 roads it has built overseas so far, which includes the 357-km Islamabad-Lahore highway.
